Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid Holds Bankruptcy Clinic

A new bankruptcy clinic was held by the Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid (TRLA) last week in Brownsville to assist residents who are considering this financial path.

This clinic is just one of several initiatives by TRLA's Community Justice Program that works with local bar associations to provide free legal services to low-income clients. It is staffed by private attorneys and legal aid employees who donate their time and services. Clinics like these are aimed at those individuals who are facing serious personal debt and are considering bankruptcy as a final solution.

Those individuals who attended the clinic last week were instructed about their legal rights, their right when dealing with creditors and debt collectors and how to begin the bankruptcy process, if it was advisable. Pablo Almaguer, the TLRA's Private Attorney Involvement Coordinator, said that "Filing for bankruptcy is one option for people who are facing a growing amount of debt and don't know what to do. Our hope is that these clinics will give answers to people in desperate situations."
