Priest Files for Chapter 7 After Sex Abuse Allegations

After facing multiple charges of molesting a teen in 2003 a local priest in Northwest Indiana is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Richard Emerson, the former priest in question, filed in the US Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia on Feb. 24. In his filing Emerson listed $53,713 in liabilities and $53,184 in assets. Emerson is currently facing charges of child molestation in both Indiana and Florida.

One of his lawsuits dates back to 2003 where Emerson is being accused of molesting a young boy while working in the St. Thomas More Church in Munster.  His trial for that accusation will begin in March 2012.  Emerson also stands accused of molesting a young boy in St. Charles Borromeo Church in Orlando. He finally gave up his career in the clergy in 2006 after being removed from the clergy by the Gary Diocese in Indiana.
